Recycling
Saint Xavier University has taken part in the recycling effort for several years. The University actively encourages waste reduction by informing students about the benefits of recycling and competing in the annual national contest, Recycle Mania.
Recycle Mania is a nationwide competition between colleges and universities promoting recycling as well as waste reduction within campus communities. This competition takes place every January and lasts 10 weeks.
Facts & Figures
- On campus, we collect 3,000 lbs. of loose debris each month.
- On average, we collect 120 lbs. of debris per day.
- With each pick up, there may be up to 50 percent contaminants.
- The average person generates 600 times their adult weight in garbage during his or her lifetime.
- Making one aluminum soda can from recycled aluminum takes 96 percent less energy than making a new can from bauxite ore.
- One ton of paper made from recycled pulp saves:
- 17 trees
- 3 cubic yards of landfill space
- 7,000 gallons of water
- 4200KWH - enough to heat your home for half a year.
